Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Hi Dan ~ thank you for the explanation of the Uniqueness Square. Let's see if I have this right

. . . a square, consisting of 4 cells, cannot contain just 2 discrete values, as that would make the puzzle's solution non-unique.

Example of a square that is not More...

If anyone can resolve this puzzle w/o guessing, please share your logical progression. I could only get (positively) cell D. Everything else was substitution 'til failure (until ~finally~ success).

Possibilities and orphans - no guessing.

Comment for Meredith below

The key was in 39 Down. Once I found 4 cells with 4,5,6,7, I was able to eliminate those numbers from other cells and everything fell into place.

Meredith - You have correctly stated the uniqueness rule, except that it doesn't have to occur in a square. The same is true anywhere on adjacent lines ore columns. E.g., also not allowed is

X 4 X X 5 X
X 5 x x 4 x

The point is that in all such situations, you could reverse the More...

Uniques can also chain in loops, and they can also occur in 3x2 and 4x2 rectangles

Correct. On 3-9-2010.

Straightforward with orphans. Meredith, did you use orphans, as they resolve most of the puzzle and lead on logically to the rest?

Ross, that puzzle has a comment referring back to a 2006 similarity.
