Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Some would say my solution was not a nada. I think it qualifies because it was -o-p and I didn't guess. After filling in the gimmes (H, I, M, T, U & Z), you can see that D or L must be 9. And, if you look carefully at the structure of the puzzle, you can see that everything is going to lay out More...

nada = no orphans, no probabilities and no guessing.
D=9 is a guess unless there’s a simple (nada) proof that L!=9, which there isn’t.

Mike, a lot of easys and moderates are solved the way you describe I think, but all you are doing is guessing and instantly 'seeing' that it works. If it doesn't work then you guess the other option and are able to instantly see that it works.

me - I disagree. Sometimes you can see the answer as a whole, without going through all the steps. It's no less a nada when that happens. If what you saw didn't work, then you didn't solve it and it wasn't a nada. But, this is just a matter of semantics and philosophy as far as I am concerned.

Aspie, This on is a Nada? Or +P?
Thank you

What you are saying Mike makes no sense. Sorry.

Luca, I won’t know what this one is unless I do it again. I’m not sure even if I finished it, too many days ago.

No o or p but mental chains. Some will say that's guessing and whether it is or not is not a problem for me.

Nice philosophical discussion. I favor the viewpoint that logical intuition is a legitimate outgrowth of empirical practice. If a human can speed read or excel at athletic or martial arts a human can 'see' a solution in a kakuro puzzle grid without consciously being aware of the reasoning More...

It's called guessing.

Until you can do it on a regular basis. Then probability kicks in and you have to admit the existence of either persistent luck or intuition (subconscious cognition). Rationalists would prefer the latter.
