Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

I turned off the timer. I had to use the quad-orphans and still had to use an extended chain elimination. Maybe I missed an easier path.

Garmin should make a GPS for these puzzles...

How do you do quad orphans?

Carolyn,
The Sum or rows minus sum of columns = 12 (assuming math is right). So sum of row orphans (K,P) minus sum of column oprphans (J,Q) is 12. Just another piece of logic to apply when limiting possibilities for each entry.

UrBuddie,

I too had to use an extended chain (it was straight forward - easy to get the contradiction, and easy to solve once wrong branch eliminated), but it was too many steps for me to do in my head.

UrBuddie,

Hindsight is better - after solving it once with extended logic - I looked again at the point with 8 numbers filled in - discovered that an 'if A or B' logic both led to no 9's, thus no 4's in 26-down - then it was straight forward

I had to guess but I luckily guessed well and got it fairly quickly after giving up on logic.

Really nice problem. No chains needed, given Steve's observation.

orphans not needed. interactions between 11D and 12D top two rows then 13D and 12D bottom two rows eliminate all 9's from 26D.

then some work, and it all drops out

I needed both Chris's hint & orphans, then still some work but doable without guessing, 2019
